Contemporary Sussex Locations
Bosham
Location: West Sussex, PO18
An incredible new build, Grand Designs location home in West Sussex on a 1.5 acre site, with the most beautifully landscaped gardens.
The main home is formed of two parts; a two storey component anchors into the ground with a flint plinth whilst its smaller single storey sister hovers over a newly constructed Natural Swimming Pond. These two parts of the building are connected by a glass link which floats over water, this further detaches the single storey part of the building accentuating its uniquely intimate relationship with the site’s waterscape and nature.
In the middle of the house is a dramatic triple height space over the dining area with floating balconies on the First and Second Floors which take advantage of the views created by the double height glazing. This space also assists with solar gains and passive ventilation.
Upperton
Location: West Sussex, GU28
‘Upperton’ is an incredible family location home, built on the site of a farmworker’s cottage in the South Downs National Park. A new construction of concrete and brick designed with a formation of stepped levels beginning with a single storey entrance at the north of the building, and leading to a three storey tower at the south elevation.
The ground floor entrance vestibule leads to an open plan kitchen, dining and family room which has a ceiling height of 4.5m. The walls are raw concrete and the floors are white oiled pine floorboards. The kitchen is configured with a principal island positioned centrally within the space, with the utilities hidden within a recess. Large concrete pillars that flank the main hall are home to ancillary rooms such as a cloakroom, utility, and an office.
Through an inner passageway is the drawing room. South facing and with large windows, the room is flooded with natural light and double doors lead out to a terrace which overlooks the undulating land that surrounds the house. This room is filled with contemporary art and large tapestries, with both antique and contemporary furnishings. An open fire place is a central focal point in the room.
The house has 7 bedrooms in total located on the upper two floors.
Mayfield
Location: East Sussex, TN20
An imposing country house location built in an American Gothic style, with a number of covered verandahs and a steep mansard roof punctured by multiple tier dormer windows, plus a glazed loggia.
Whilst the exterior has a very clear American architectural influence, the interiors of the property take on a classical French style but with a contemporary twist, featuring many tones of white and pale greys, and a selection of antique and individual furnishings.
A long, glazed entrance hall leads to the open plan kitchen and family room, which further opens to the terrace which wraps around the house. The kitchen is a hand painted shaker style in solid wood and with quartz countertops. The cooker is an Aga.
The drawing room has an open fireplace with log burner, and doors out to one of the covered veranda’s. On the first and second floors are a total of 6 bedrooms, all of good proportions and flooded with natural light. There are three bathrooms each with freestanding baths.
Outside of the house the gardens wrap around the property, there are multiple terraces and large lawned areas.
